Grip and Overgrip Rules

Grip and Overgrip Rules

3 min read

The grip of a padel racket is the wrapped section of the handle that the player holds. The FIP equipment rules address grip requirements as part of the overall racket specification.

What the FIP Rules Require

The FIP rules specify that the racket handle must be covered with a grip material that prevents the racket from slipping out of the player’s hand during play. The grip must:

  • Cover the handle completely
  • Provide sufficient friction or texture to prevent slippage
  • Allow for secure attachment of the mandatory wrist strap

There is no specification for grip material, thickness, or colour — any grip that meets the anti-slip requirement is permitted.

Base Grips and Overgrips

Most padel rackets come with a base grip (also called a replacement grip) already applied by the manufacturer. This is a thicker wrap, typically made from synthetic leather or foam, that provides the primary cushioning layer.

An overgrip is a thinner, often tacky or absorbent wrap applied on top of the base grip. Overgrips are:

  • Permitted under FIP rules
  • Very widely used at all levels of play
  • Replaced frequently (they wear out quickly with heavy use)

Using an overgrip slightly increases the grip circumference, which some players prefer for comfort or control.

The Wrist Strap Attachment

The grip and handle area also anchors the mandatory wrist strap (also called a safety cord or lanyard). The FIP rules require that the wrist strap be attached to the racket and looped around the player’s wrist at all times when playing a shot. The grip wrap must not cover or block the wrist strap attachment point.

See wrist strap rules for full details on this requirement. See racket specifications for the full racket dimension and surface rules.

Grip Condition During Play

Grips that have deteriorated to the point of being slippery or unsafe may be flagged by a referee in supervised matches. Players are responsible for maintaining their equipment in a condition suitable for safe play. Replacing a worn overgrip takes under a minute and can be done during a changeover.
