Proper Attire

The FIP (International Padel Federation) rules on player attire are relatively minimal compared to some other racket sports. The main binding requirement for all levels of play is footwear — specifically that shoes must have non-marking soles.

Footwear Rules

The FIP rules explicitly require that players wear footwear with non-marking soles. This is the only hard footwear regulation that applies to all levels of play.

Non-marking soles are required because:

  • Dark or rubber soles leave scuff marks on court surfaces
  • Court owners and venue operators universally enforce this for court maintenance
  • It applies equally to hard courts, artificial grass, and indoor surfaces

Shoes should also be appropriate for the court surface being played on. Most padel courts use artificial grass; dedicated padel or padel/tennis court shoes with the correct sole pattern provide better grip and reduce injury risk.

Clothing Requirements

The FIP rules require players to wear appropriate sports clothing. There is no mandated colour, style, or brand requirement for recreational or club play under the base FIP regulations.

In practice, appropriate sports clothing means:

  • Standard sports tops (t-shirts, polo shirts, sports jerseys)
  • Sports shorts, skirts, or leggings
  • Clothing that allows freedom of movement

Professional and Tournament Play

For FIP-sanctioned professional events (Premier Padel and equivalent tours), additional regulations apply:

  • Players must wear sponsor-approved or tournament-required kit during matches
  • Competitor branding on clothing is governed by tour regulations and may restrict third-party logos
  • National federation tournaments may impose their own dress standards — always check the specific event regulations before competing

Wrist Strap

While not a clothing item, the racket wrist strap is a mandatory equipment rule that applies during play. Players must keep the wrist strap attached to their wrist at all times while hitting the ball. This is covered in the wrist strap rules.

For footwear type guidance, see padel shoes.
