Alternative Scoring Methods

The FIP Rules of Padel (Rule 1) define three official alternative scoring formats that may replace the standard scoring system. Any alternative format must be declared and agreed before the match begins. See scoring system for the standard format and tie-break rules for service order in tie-breaks.

Standard Format (Reference)

The default format is best-of-three sets:

  • Sets won first to 6 games with a minimum 2-game lead; tie-break at 6-6
  • Match won by first team to win 2 sets

Alternative Format A — Mini Set (Four Games)

A shortened set format:

  • A set is won by the first team to reach 4 games with a minimum 2-game lead
  • If the score is tied at 4 games all, a tie-break is played to decide the set
  • All other rules (service order, changeovers, etc.) apply as in the standard format

Alternative Format B — Tie-Break to Decide the Match (Up to 7 Points)

Used when the match is tied at one set all:

  • Instead of a third set, a single tie-break game is played to decide the match
  • The first team to reach 7 points wins, with a minimum 2-point lead
  • This tie-break replaces the third set entirely
  • Service rotation and side changes follow the standard tie-break rules

Alternative Format C — Super Tie-Break to Decide the Match (Up to 10 Points)

Used when the match is tied at one set all:

  • Instead of a third set, a single super tie-break game is played to decide the match
  • The first team to reach 10 points wins, with a minimum 2-point lead
  • This super tie-break replaces the third set entirely
  • Service rotation and side changes follow the standard tie-break rules
